Santa Barbara, CA-To hear chamber music played as it was intended - by friends, for the pure joy of music-making - is a rare privilege. And when those friends are such extraordinary musicians as William Preucil, concertmaster of the Cleveland Orchestra; Eric Kim, principal cellist of the Cincinnati Symphony; and the sparkling Canadian pianist Arthur Rowe, then that rare opportunity becomes the consummate musical eavesdropping.

The Preucil, Kim & Rowe Recital will take place on Tuesday, November 28 at 8 pm in Lehmann Hall on the campus of the Music Academy of the West. The recital program reveals the surprising emotional and musical breadth of this most intimate medium: Brahms' Sonata for Cello and Piano No. 2 in F major, op. 99; R. Strauss' Sonata for Violin and Piano in E-flat major, op. 18; and Mendelssohn's Piano Trio No. 1 in D minor, op. 49.

Composed by Brahms at the height of his maturity, the second sonata for cello and piano plunges players and listeners alike into the longing and passion that course through Brahms' work and life. Yet Brahms draped this passionate, vividly colored music over a taut and disciplined frame. Richard Strauss' virtuosic sonata for violin and piano - devilishly difficult for both players - is at once dignified, grave and emotionally complex. With typical youthful exuberance, Mendelssohn devised a perfectly formed trio: agile, playful and effervescent in the outer movements, while song-like and unabashedly romantic in the middle Andante. It is among his best chamber works.

Concertmaster of the Cleveland Orchestra since 1994, William Preucil also serves as violin soloist and concertmaster of the Mainly Mozart Festival Orchestra. He is a member of the Lanier Trio. Prior to his appointment with the Cleveland Orchestra, Mr. Preucil was for seven years first violinist of the Cleveland Quartet, performing over 100 concerts annually. He regularly performs at chamber music festivals in Seattle, Sitka, Sarasota and Santa Fe as well as at international festivals in Switzerland, France and Germany. Mr. Preucil is Distinguished Professor of Violin at the Cleveland Institute of Music and artist in residence at the University of Maryland's School of Music. He was previously professor of music at the Eastman School.

Eric Kim has been principal cellist of the Cincinnati Symphony since 1989. He has performed throughout the U.S., Europe, South America, and the Middle and Far East as a recitalist, chamber musician and soloist. He made his début as a soloist with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at the age of fifteen. He has since appeared with numerous orchestras and has collaborated with Zubin Mehta, Paavo Jarvi, and Jesus López-Cobos among other conductors. As a chamber musician Mr. Kim has performed with Emanuel Ax, Joshua Bell, Yefim Bronfman, Lynn Harrell and Cho-Liang Lin at festivals worldwide. He has toured as a member of the Pinchas Zukerman and Friends chamber ensemble.

A native of Alberta, Canada, pianist Arthur Rowe holds degrees from the University of Western Ontario and Indiana University. While at Indiana, he began a long association with violinist William Preucil with whom he has performed for nearly three decades. An accomplished chamber musician, Mr. Rowe has appeared with the Cleveland, Brentano and Miami string quartets, among others. He has been a frequent performer at the Blossom, Interlochen, Niagara and Santa Fe summer festivals and is often heard on Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and Public Radio. Mr. Rowe is currently Professor of Piano at the University of Victoria in Canada.

The Music Academy of the West presents this recital by William Preucil, Eric Kim and Arthur Rowe as part of its inaugural Advanced Strings Workshop, November 28 through December 2, 2006. The public is also invited to observe free public masterclasses at the Music Academy on Friday, December 1 at 7 pm: Mr. Preucil will offer a violin masterclass in Lehmann Hall; Mr. Kim will teach a cello masterclass in Stewart Hall. In addition to these public events, the Advanced Strings Workshop will provide daily private instruction and group lessons for a small, carefully selected group of seminar participants.

The Advanced Strings Workshop is made possible through the generous support of the Helen F. Whitaker Fund. The recital is sponsored by KDB Radio.

Tickets for the Preucil, Kim & Rowe Recital are $35 for the general public and $15 for students. Tickets will be available at the door beginning at 7 pm on the evening of Tuesday, November 28. Lehmann Hall and Stewart Hall are located in the Main House on the Miraflores campus of the Music Academy of the West at 1070 Fairway Road, Santa Barbara. Free parking is available on campus.
