Santa Barbara, CA- "Songs from the Silver Screen" will be the theme of this year's CABARET, the annual gala benefiting the Music Academy of the West's full-scholarship program. The event will take place at 5:30 pm Thursday, August 9, in the Plaza del Sol rotunda of Fess Parker's DoubleTree Resort in Santa Barbara.

In addition to cocktails and a gourmet dinner, CABARET will feature young artists from the Academy's acclaimed Voice Program performing a selection of unforgettable movie music under the direction of celebrated Broadway conductor Don Pippin. Sponsored in part by Santa Barbara Bank & Trust, the event is dedicated to the renowned mezzo-soprano Marilyn Horne, who is marking her 10th year as director of the Academy's Voice Program. Ms. Horne will be on hand.

"With this spectacular evening of musical entertainment we'll pay tribute to Marilyn Horne and ensure that the Music Academy's full-scholarship program continues to support the most talented of today's up-and-coming classical music artists," said Scott Reed, vice president for institutional advancement at the Music Academy.

Serving as co-chairs of this year's CABARET are Margo Baker Barbakow, Nancy Hunter, and Diane Sullivan. According to Mr. Reed, the trio has brought a new level of creativity to planning for the event. "All three are well known in local philanthropic circles, and their efforts on behalf of this year's CABARET have been nothing less than outstanding," he said.

All told, 24 Academy voice students will perform as part of this year's CABARET. The evening's program also will include the screening of film clips and an auction featuring KEYT journalist John Palminteri. A three-course dinner and premium wines will be served. Prices range from $300 for individual tickets to $10,000 for tables of 10. All proceeds will benefit the Music Academy's full-scholarship program.
