
Music Academy to Host Renowned Clarinetist David Shifrin

Residency will include a performance at The Lobero and a masterclass
Santa Barbara, CA- Celebrated clarinetist David Shifrin will perform at the Lobero Theatre and present a masterclass at Lehmann Hall as part of an August residency at the Music Academy of the West. Mr. Shifrin will join several Music Academy faculty members for a program of Ponchielli, Brahms, Hasenöhrl, and Mozart at The Lobero on Tuesday, August 7. Beginning at 8 pm, the performance will be the concluding installment of this season's Tuesdays @ 8 concert series at The Lobero. Tickets will cost $38. Mr. Shifrin's masterclass will take place at 1 pm Monday, August 6. Lehmann Hall is on the Music Academy campus, located at 1070 Fairway Road in Santa Barbara. Tickets for the masterclass will cost $12 ($11 for students and seniors).
An Avery Fisher Prize recipient and much in demand as an orchestral soloist, recitalist, and chamber musician, Mr. Shifrin attended the Music Academy in 1968 and received the Academy's Distinguished Alumni Award in 1998. He has performed with the Philadelphia and Minnesota orchestras, as well as orchestras throughout Europe and Asia. Mr. Shifrin also has served as principal clarinetist with the American Symphony Orchestra and the Cleveland Orchestra, among others, and has received critical acclaim as a recitalist, appearing in such venues as Alice Tully Hall, Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, and the Library of Congress. As a chamber musician, he as collaborated with artists such as the Emerson String Quartet and pianists André Watts and Emanuel Ax. Mr. Shifrin has received three Grammy nominations, and his recording of the Mozart Clarinet Concerto with the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra was named Record of the Year by Stereo Review. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, his playing is "a revelation in just how beautifully the clarinet can be played."
Currently a professor of music at Yale University, Mr. Shifrin has also served on the faculties of The Juilliard School, the University of Southern California, the University of Michigan, the Cleveland Institute of Music, and the University of Hawaii.
The Lobero Theatre is located at 33 East Canon Perdido Street in Santa Barbara.
The Music Academy of the West is celebrating its 60th anniversary with an unprecedented 2007 season program featuring numerous classical music luminaries.
