Music Academy Of The West Names Emeritus Directors

Santa Barbara, CA-In recognition of their sustained and extraordinary efforts on behalf of the Music Academy of the West, six individuals have received the honorary title of Emeritus Director. The title is the highest honor bestowed upon former Music Academy board directors.

The Emeritus Director conferees are Judith W. Bartholomew, Carole Halsted, Philip W. Marking, Mead F. Northrop, Judith F. Smith, and Marion Stewart.

A former special education teacher, Judy Bartholomew has been a community volunteer for 30 years. She was a board director for the Music Academy from 1993 to 2005, serving as chair in 2003 and 2004. Ms. Bartholomew also has served on the boards for the Community Arts Music Association (CAMA) and the Family Service Agency, both in Santa Barbara. She currently serves on the Music Academy board's Governance Committee.

A medical microbiology graduate from Stanford University, Carole Halsted worked for the California Department of Public Health before moving to Santa Barbara, where she co-founded the clothing store W.A. King. Ms. Halsted was a board director for the Music Academy from 1989 to 2004, serving as chair in 2001 and 2002. She has also chaired the Women's Auxiliary of the Music Academy of the West, and been involved with the Stanford Club of Santa Barbara (board member and president), the Junior League of Santa Barbara (board member and treasurer), the Garden Club of Santa Barbara (board member and president), and Santa Barbara Botanic Garden (board member).

Phil Marking is a founding member of the law firm Fell, Marking, Abkin, Montgomery, Granet & Raney, and has practiced law in Santa Barbara since 1970. His practice is primarily focused on estate and trust matters. After receiving his law degree from UC Berkeley (Boalt Hall) and being admitted to practice in California in 1966, Mr. Marking served as a deputy attorney general for the state of California from 1966 through 1969. A former president of the Santa Barbara Estate Planning Council, he was a board director for the Music Academy from 1991 to 2003, serving as chair from 1995 to 1997. Mr. Marking also has served as president of the Santa Barbara Community Environmental Council, as treasurer of the Santa Barbara Humane Society, and as a board member for Santa Barbara Beautiful.

Mead Northrop is a retired physician who was a board director for the Music Academy from 1994 to 2007. During that time he served as board chair from 1998 to 2000, co-chaired the 50th Anniversary Committee in 1997, and co-chaired the Renaissance Campaign Committee in 2005 and 2006. Mr. Northrop received his undergraduate degree from Hamilton College in Clinton, New York, and his medical degree from New York State College of Medicine at Syracuse. He studied radiology at the University of Washington and was subsequently named a fellow in radiation oncology at the M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. Thereafter, he received a faculty appointment at the University of Florida College of Medicine, before joining the staff at the Cancer Center of Santa Barbara in 1972. Prior to his retirement in 1996, Mr. Northrop served as the center's medical director. A past president of the Santa Barbara County Medical Society, he recently served on the Cancer Center board.

During her tenure as a board director for the Music Academy from 1984 to 2002, Judy Smith chaired the Benefits, House and Grounds, and Finance committees, and served as second vice chair. She remains active on the board's Council Host Committee. Ms. Smith also formerly headed CAMA, the Stanford Club of Santa Barbara, the Santa Barbara Museum of Art Women's Board, and the Junior League of Santa Barbara Sustainers, and is a former director for the National Charity League, the Las Positas Park (now Elings Park) Foundation, and CAMA's Women's Board. In 1996 she received the Community Award given by the Junior League of Santa Barbara. Currently, Ms. Smith is a board director for the Braille Auxiliary, Opera Santa Barbara, and Quire of Voyces, and chairs the Governance Committee for CAMA.

A former professional musician and music teacher, Marion Stewart was a board director from 1993 to 2004 and chaired the Council of Contributors, the Academy's membership group for donors who contribute $2,500 or more to the Academy's full-scholarship annual fund, from 1992 to 2004. She currently serves on the Board's Student Activities and Alumni Committee. Also a current board director for CAMA, Ms. Stewart previously served as president of the Santa Barbara Museum of Art Docents' Council, as a board director for the Santa Barbara Symphony, and as a member of the Santa Barbara Museum of Art Women's Board. The Association of Fundraising Professionals named her Volunteer of the Year for Santa Barbara and Ventura counties in 2002.

Founded in 1947, the Music Academy of the West is among the nation's preeminent summer schools and festivals for gifted young classical musicians. The Academy provides these promising musicians with the opportunity for advanced study and frequent performance under the guidance of internationally renowned faculty artists, as well as guest conductors and soloists. Admission to the Academy is strictly merit based, and Fellows receive full scholarships (tuition, room, and board). Academy alumni are members of major symphony orchestras, chamber orchestras, ensembles, opera companies, and university and conservatory faculties throughout the world.
