Santa Barbara, CA— The Music Academy of the West’s 14th annual Golf Invitational will take place October 15 at the storied Birnam Wood Golf Club in Montecito. A perennial favorite among area golf enthusiasts, business leaders, and philanthropists, the event is a benefit for the Music Academy’s full-scholarship fund.
Player registration will begin at 11:15 am and activities will include an evening dinner featuring Music Academy alumnus (2002) Alpin Hong, a pianist who has won legions of followers with a unique combination of showmanship and brilliant technique. Mr. Hong was hailed as “a pianistic firebrand” by The New York Times following his standing-room-only debut at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall – a recital that was the result of his winning first prize in the 2001 Concert Artists Guild International Competition.
“Alpin Hong is a one-of-a-kind artist who we know will dazzle our golf invitational participants. He will have everyone on their feet cheering by the end of his performance. Overall, this promises to be a memorable event,” said Scott Reed, Vice President for Institutional Advancement at the Music Academy.
An in-home recital featuring Mr. Hong will be among the items on offer during a live auction that will take place during the invitational dinner. Other items to be auctioned include four nights at the luxurious Four Seasons Hotel in New York City, accompanied by six passes to a festival of Carnegie Hall performances highlighting world-class opera singers associated with the Marilyn Horne Foundation. Also up for auction will be a three-night, four-day stay in an exclusive penthouse suite at Lake Las Vegas, compliments of The Markers Golf Club. The latter package includes greens fees at the renowned Jack Nicklaus Signature Course at Reflection Bay Golf Club.
Co-chairing this year’s Music Academy Golf Invitational are Angelo R. Mozilo, chairman and CEO of Countrywide Financial Corp.; Lachlan Hough, a former senior executive with Security Pacific Bank and American Express Bank; Music Academy Board member Diane Pace Sullivan; and James Tilton, managing director of Trust Company of the West.
