Tickets for Special June 23 Community Concert at the Santa Barbara Bowl to go on Sale May 12

Marking the Music Academy of the West's 60th anniversary, the event will feature acclaimed composer John Williams conducting the Academy Festival Orchestra and violin virtuoso Gil Shaham

Santa Barbara, CA-Tickets for a special community concert at the Santa Barbara Bowl featuring composer John Williams and violinist Gil Shaham will go on sale at 11 am May 12. Tickets can be purchased in person at the Santa Barbara Bowl, located at 1122 North Milpas St., or via Ticketmaster (583-8700, www.ticketmaster.com). Presented as a 60th anniversary gift from the Music Academy of the West to the local community, the concert will take place at 7 pm June 23. Tickets will cost just $13.50, plus applicable fees; customers will be limited to six tickets apiece.

Mr. Williams has received numerous honors for his scores for Jaws, E.T., Schindler's List, and the original Star Wars trilogy, among many others. Also a noted composer of concert works, he currently holds the title of Artist-in-Residence at Tanglewood. Mr. Shaham has been hailed widely for his sure and engaging playing and is much sought after for performances worldwide. The program will include selections from Mr. Williams's film scores and his violin concerto, as well as Shostakovich's Festive Overture, op. 96.

The Music Academy of the West will further celebrate its 60th anniversary with an unprecedented 2007 season program featuring numerous other classical music luminaries. The Academy will present more than 190 events over the course of this year's summer school and festival, which begins June 18 and concludes on August 11. Additional highlights will include an ambitious mounting of La Bohème, performances by baritone Thomas Hampson, violinist Gilles Apap, and the Takács Quartet, and conducting turns by Alexander Lazarev and David Robertson.
