Vos Named To Music Academy Board of Directors

Santa Barbara, CA— Hubert “Hugh” Vos, a former senior finance executive with a succession of leading U.S. companies, has been named to the Board of Directors for the Music Academy of the West.

Born in Paris, Mr. Vos graduated from the Institut d’Etudes Politiques in Paris before being awarded a graduate fellowship to attend the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton, from which he obtained a master’s degree in 1956. The following year he was hired by International Packers Limited of Chicago, which over the next seven years stationed him in Brazil, Argentina, Australia, and the United Kingdom, the latter as financial director. Mr. Vos went on to work for the Monsanto Company in St. Louis as international controller, for Smith Kline & French Laboratories of Philadelphia as vice president for planning and finance, for Commercial Credit Company in Baltimore as senior vice president for finance, and for Norton Simon Inc. in New York as senior vice president for finance and administration. He was also a board director for Norton Simon. From 1979 to 1984, Mr. Vos served as senior vice president, chief financial officer, and a board director for Becton, Dickinson & Co. He was also an independent board director for mutual funds at T. Rowe Price Associates of Baltimore for 25 years.

Mr. Vos moved to Santa Barbara in 1985.

A past president of the Scholarship Foundation of Santa Barbara and a former chairman of the board for Surgical Eye Expeditions International, Mr. Vos currently serves as a trustee of the Santa Barbara Museum of Art and as chairman of its finance committee. His is also chairman of the Kavli Foundation investment committee, and is a member of the investment committees for Cottage Hospital and the Scholarship Foundation of Santa Barbara. He began serving his three-year term on the Music Academy Board of Directors on January 1.

“I’ve grown increasingly appreciative of fine music throughout the years, which makes my association with the Music Academy all the more special,” said Mr. Vos, who is a member of the Academy’s Council of Contributors and participates in the compeer outreach program for Academy Fellows.

Founded in 1947, the Music Academy of the West is among the nation’s preeminent summer schools and festivals for gifted young classical musicians. The Academy provides these promising musicians with the opportunity for advanced study and frequent performance under the guidance of internationally renowned faculty artists, as well as guest conductors and soloists. Admission to the Academy is strictly merit based, and Fellows receive full scholarships (tuition, room, and board). Academy alumni are members of major symphony orchestras, chamber orchestras, ensembles, opera companies, and university and conservatory faculties throughout the world.
