Santa Barbara, CA – Maurice Singer, a former entertainment executive turned financial advisor, has been named to the Board of Directors for the Music Academy of the West.
Born in New York City, Mr. Singer studied English and economics at the University of Vermont and went on to hold a succession of senior management positions in the film and television industry, including president of HBO Films and senior vice president at Home Box Office, Columbia Pictures Corp., and Westinghouse Broadcasting Co. Shortly after becoming a licensed financial advisor, he founded Los Angeles-based Riviera Capital Management, an independent firm specializing in wealth management, venture capital, and initial public offering consultation, in 1993. A Montecito resident for two years, Mr. Singer is currently a founding principal at The Evergreen Advantage, a private mortgage fund based in Santa Monica with offices in Montecito. The firm has a loan portfolio of real estate throughout California.
In addition to being a member of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences and the National Association of Television Broadcasters, Mr. Singer serves as a board director for Tempra Technology and Qnext Corp.
"I am particularly pleased to serve on the Board of Directors for the Music Academy of the West. The organization boasts an impressive management team and has enjoyed a remarkable run of success in recent years. I can't wait to get to work," said Mr. Singer.
Founded in 1947, the Music Academy of the West is among the nation's preeminent summer schools and festivals for gifted young classical musicians. The Academy provides these promising musicians with the opportunity for advanced study and frequent performance under the guidance of internationally renowned faculty artists, guest conductors, and soloists. Admission to the Academy is strictly merit based, and Fellows receive full scholarships (tuition, room, and board). Academy alumni are members of major symphony orchestras, chamber orchestras, ensembles, opera companies, and university and conservatory faculties throughout the world. Many enjoy careers as prominent solo artists. In 2009 the Music Academy partnered with the Granada Music & Arts Conservatory to launch Santa Barbara Strings, an innovative educational program designed to train and nurture local classical string musicians ages 4 to 18. Based in Santa Barbara, the Music Academy of the West presents more than 200 public events annually, including performances by faculty, visiting artists, and Fellows; masterclasses; orchestra and chamber music concerts; and fully staged opera. The Music Academy began screening live performances by the world-renowned Metropolitan Opera at Hahn Hall in October 2008. For more information, visit www.musicacademy.org.
