Programs of Study & Audition Requirements

We offer 5 programs of study, each with extensive performance opportunities:

Each program is designed to provide an optimal mix of individual training and collaborative music-making. The Academy program is particularly distinguished by the abundant and varied performance opportunities available to Fellows, including masterclasses, solo and chamber recitals, orchestra concerts, and opera productions.

A String Leadership Program under the direction of faculty artist Glenn Dicterow will be debuted for violinists during the summer of 2014, offering training for concertmaster and principal second positions to Fellows wishing to pursue leadership roles in orchestras. The program will include intensive study of all roles of section playing through masterclasses exploring orchestral repertoire, as well as private lessons and orchestral coachings led by a faculty of acclaimed concertmasters including Mr. Dicterow and visiting artists Jorja Fleezanis, Alexander Treger, and Martin Chalifour. All violin Fellows will be invited to audition for and participate in classes, through which select Fellows will be offered leadership positions in Academy Festival Orchestra concerts and other Academy performances.

In summer 2014 the Music Academy will debut a new series of workshops and masterclasses entitled The Path to Optimal Performance. The intensely competitive environment of the performance world can pose a challenge for musicians at all stages of development. Performing music at a world-class level requires a unique combination of musical insight, technical virtuosity, and powers of concentration. Performance coach and trumpeter Bill Williams will present this series of workshops, lectures, and interactive coaching sessions designed to provide Music Academy Fellows with the opportunity to develop their performance skills in an in-depth, experiential environment.

2014 Audition Requirements

STRINGS, WINDS, BRASS & PERCUSSION:

Applicants have the option of a Live Audition OR Video Upload Audition.
Equal enrollment consideration is granted to both audition methods.

Live Auditions: select your prefered audition city and date within the application. Live auditions are filmed by Academy administration for later review by Academy faculty. At least one faculty member is typically present to observe the auditions. Applying by the deadline does not guarantee a live audition; live auditions are on a first-come, first-served basis. See audition schedule prior to submitting the application to verify if a particular city’s schedule is already full.

Video Upload Auditions: upload one video of the required repertoire as listed under your instrument (see instrument repertoire requirement links below). Video auditions must be uploaded to the online application prior to submitting the application by January 15, 2014. Video must be a continuous, unedited recording (do not stop or pause filming between repertoire selections). We recommend using the most up-to-date versions of Chrome, Safari, or Firefox as your internet browser for the sake of uploading speed. Internet Explorer is not recommended due to slower and unstable video upload functionality.

String Quartet Seminar (SQS) for Violin, Viola and Cello Applicants: those interested in being considered for the SQS in addition to general festival enrollment must upload to the online application a video of the SQS audition repertoire. See your instrument's link below for SQS repertoire requirements. Both individuals and pre-formed groups may apply for SQS. If you are unable to upload your SQS audition video prior to the January 15 application deadline, contact admissions@musicacademy.org after January 15 for permission to re-activate your application in order to add your SQS video. SQS videos will be accepted through March 1, 2014.
