the Compeer Program: Friends among friends

For a decade the Compeer Program has fostered a rich sense of community among Music Academy of the West Fellows and audience members, creating a supportive environment unique to the Music Academy Summer Festival.

What is a Compeer?

The program matches each Academy Fellow with a "Compeer," an Academy patron who has volunteered to attend his or her Fellow's weekly masterclasses and performances and enjoy occasional meals and activities together. The result is an intimate community where both music and friendship thrive.

For Compeers, the program offers the opportunity to get to know talented young musicians and gain insight into what it takes to prepare for a career in classical music. Attending Summer Festival performances is that much more rewarding when one truly knows the performers. Fellows benefit from the knowledge that their music is reaching specific ears and hearts. Said one former Fellow, "It's extra special singing for people who appreciate it. I always felt there was someone rooting for me. I've made fabulous friends!"

Fellows live in Academy residence halls and do not require housing or financial support from Compeers.

Who Can Compeer?

Participation in the Compeer Program is a benefit of membership in the Academy Council of Contributors. Non-Council members who would like to participate are encouraged to contact the Music Academy.

What is involved in being a Compeer?

The Compeer Program kicks off each year with a celebration after the first week of the Summer Festival. Compeers must be available weeks 2 through 8 of the Summer Festival. The most important aspect of being a Compeer is attending Fellows' masterclasses. Compeers also are encouraged to attend Fellows' performances, and occasionally socialize with or call Fellows. Ideally, Compeers and Fellows communicate at least once a week.

Volunteer Ushers Needed

The Music Academy of the West needs ushers, ticket takers, and general volunteers for each 8-week Summer Festival. No experience required. In return for your service you will enjoy many hours of glorious music.
