As Santa Barbara’s largest classical music event in history, more than 7,000 $10 and free tickets will be offered to enjoy the New York Philharmonic at Santa Barbara City College’s La Playa Stadium. The historic concert will mark Alan Gilbert’s final appearance as New York Philharmonic Music Director.
Maestro Gilbert will conduct Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, featuring Music Academy superstar alumna soprano Susanna Phillips (‘02,’03), mezzo-soprano Sasha Cooke ('02), tenor Joe Kaiser, and bass Morris Robinson as soloists in the work’s iconic “Ode to Joy,” and closing with a stunning fireworks display over the ocean.
The Monday, July 31 concert will begin promptly at 7:30 pm, with gates opening at 6 pm.
Fireworks are scheduled at 9:15, deployed from a barge in the Pacific Ocean, viewable from the waterfront and La Playa Stadium.
Program is subject to change.
The 70th Anniversary Community Concert will be dedicated in remembrance of Léni Fé Bland.
The concert is made possible in partnership with the Santa Barbara City College Foundation, Santa Barbara City College, and the city of Santa Barbara.
The Music Academy of the West’s partnership with the New York Philharmonic has been made possible through the generosity of Lead Sponsors Linda and Michael Keston.
