Alan Stepansky is recognized as one of the most gifted and versatile cellists of his generation. Following a distinguished orchestral career that saw him perform with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and serve as principal cellist of the Boston Pops and associate principal cellist of the New York Philharmonic, he now regularly appears in concert as a soloist, chamber musician, and principal cellist. As a professor of cello, he maintains full studios at the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University and the Manhattan School of Music. He has performed as a guest artist of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, the Mostly Mozart Festival, and Jazz at Lincoln Center, and has appeared in concert with a diverse array of artists, including Isaac Stern, Emanuel Ax, Renée Fleming, and Frederika von Stade.
Mr. Stepansky has recorded a series of highly honored chamber music and solo discs for EMI, and has been engaged as the solo cellist for numerous major motion picture soundtracks and recording projects ranging from classical to popular and jazz. He has been the international cello artist of the Beijing International Music Festival, a faculty member at the National Orchestral Institute, and a guest artist of the Domaine Forget and Texas music festivals. Mr. Stepansky is a cofounder and serves as music director of MusicWorks For Peace, an organization that promotes and supports music education for children in poor and under-served communities.
Mr. Stepansky attended the Curtis Institute of Music, the University of Pennsylvania, and Harvard University, where he graduated with the Horblit Prize for outstanding musical accomplishments.
He has been a member of the Music Academy faculty since 2003.
