Alan Stepansky is recognized as one of the most gifted and versatile cellists of his generation. Following a distinguished orchestral career that saw him play with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and serve as principal cellist of the Boston Pops and associate principal cellist of the New York Philharmonic, he continues to be in demand as a soloist, chamber musician, and recording artist, while devoting much of his time to teaching. 

Mr. Stepansky is coordinator of the cello department at the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University and is a founding faculty member of the ground-breaking graduate program in orchestral performance at Manhattan School of Music. He has performed as a guest artist of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, the Mostly Mozart Festival, and Jazz at Lincoln Center, and has appeared in concert with a diverse array of artists, including Isaac Stern, Emanuel Ax, Renee Fleming, and Frederika Von Stade.

Mr. Stepansky has recorded a series of chamber music and solo discs for EMI that were honored by Gramophone magazine, BBC Music Magazine, The New York Times, and the British Music Industry Association, and has been engaged as the solo cellist for numerous major motion picture soundtracks.

After studies at the Curtis Institute of Music, Mr. Stepansky graduated from Harvard University with the Horblit Prize, conferred for his outstanding musical accomplishments.

He has been a member of the Music Academy faculty since 2003.
