David Paul has worked extensively on operatic and theatrical stages throughout the United States and abroad. His recent directing highlights include Il trovatore at North Carolina Opera, Rossini's one-act operas La cambiale di matrimonio and La scala di seta at Juilliard, and Julius Caesar for the Shakespeare Theatre in Washington, D.C. He also serves as assistant director on Broadway for Terrence McNally's play Master Class featuring Tyne Daly, having previously worked on the Washington production. Other recent directing credits include a critically acclaimed production of Le nozze di Figaro for Washington National Opera, Il barbiere di Siviglia for Ash Lawn Opera, Walton's The Bear at the Tel Aviv Summer Opera Festival, and Così fan tutte for Westminster Choir College. As a member of the Shakespeare Theatre's artistic staff, he adapted and directed Hamlet and served as assistant director for productions of King Lear, Julius Caesar, Romeo and Juliet, and Euripides' Ion. Additional credits include productions at Alaska's Perseverance Theater, Atlanta Opera, California Shakespeare Theater, Chautauqua Theater Company, Juilliard, and Columbia University, among others.
Also widely recognized as among today's most dynamic acting teachers for singers, Mr. Paul is a dramatic advisor for the master of music / graduate diploma program in vocal arts at Juilliard, serving as primary acting teacher for master's and fourth-year undergraduate students in voice. He is also a faculty member for the Metropolitan Opera's Lindemann Young Artist Development Program, where he has worked as stage director and acting coach, and the Barnard College / Columbia University Department of Theatre. Mr. Paul has served as an acting coach for the International Vocal Arts Institute in Israel, "Viva Virginia" at Virginia Tech, and Placido Domingo's Domingo/Cafritz Young Artist Program at Washington National Opera.
Mr. Paul spent two seasons as a Met Opera casting associate,
and served for a season as an assistant artist manager in the vocal division at
Columbia Artists Management.
A native of
Hamburg, Germany, he
graduated summa cum laude from
Columbia University with a degree in theater arts and a specialization in
directing.
