Horn applicants must provide 2 copies of a labeled audition recording and an application. Materials must be submitted online or postmarked by 15 January 2010. Applications are considered incomplete until all required materials have been received. The Music Academy accepts six horn players each year.
The Application
The application contains three components: the application form, a one-page resume, and a short statement (100 words) explaining why you wish to attend the Music Academy.
Online applications are preferred. Applicants also have the option of downloading and printing a written application in pdf format. An application fee is required when submitting either application. Please see the application form for fees and payment methods. Written applications and audition recordings must be submitted to:
Admissions
Music Academy of the West

The resume and statement must accompany the application. Provisions exist for including these with online applications. In the case of printable applications, please attach resume and statement.
The Recorded Audition
All applicants must submit 2 copies of a recorded audition. All selections must be unaccompanied. Editing or splicing within an excerpt is unacceptable. Most excerpts are available online at http://www.hornexcerpts.org/. You may also download and print a PDF image of all of the required excerpts except the Strauss Concerto:
PDF Horn Excerpts.
Audition requirements are as follows:
- R. Strauss, Concerto No. 1, Mvt I
- Bach, Brandenburg Trio, Horn 1 (with repeats)
- R. Strauss, Don Quixote, Variation 7, Horn 2
- R. Strauss, Ein Heldenleben, Horn 1, opening to rehearsal number 2
- Beethoven, Symphony No. 6, Mvt III, Horn 1 (132-161)

The recorded audition must be submitted on CD. Avoid recording in a room that is excessively resonant, and do not add "reverb" to your recording. Please record excerpts in the order above and do not include any other excerpts or pieces. Recordings must be playable on a standard CD player.
Applicants who submit early are eligible for discounted application fees. To qualify for an early application discount, all materials - including recordings - must be submitted by the appropriate deadline. Application fees are non-refundable. See "Application Deadlines & Audition Dates" for complete details.
