Timpani / Percussion

Edward Atkatz (weeks 1-4)  Michael Werner (weeks 5-8)

Applicants must either audition live or submit an audition recording. All applicants also must submit a completed application. Online applications are preferred. Applicants also have the option of downloading and printing a written application in pdf format. Applicants must indicate their preference for a live audition or recorded audition within the application. Those requesting a live audition will be contacted in January to schedule an appointment. Materials must be submitted online or postmarked by 15 January 2010. Applications are considered incomplete until all required materials have been received. The Music Academy accepts five percussionists each year.  Live auditions take place in February/March 2010. See audition schedule below for details, also posted at "Application deadlines and Audition Dates"

The repertoire for live and recorded auditions is the same as listed below. Recordings MUST observe the following order:

Solos

  1. Short mallet solo or étude of choice
  2. Short snare drum solo or étude of choice
  3. Short timpani solo or étude of choice

Snare Drum

  1. Prokofiev, Lieutenant Kije, Mvt I, 1 to 2
  2. Rimsky-Korsakov, Scheherazade, Mvt III, D to E; Mvt IV, P to U, condense rests before S
  3. Shostakovich, Symphony No. 10, Mvt II, 98 to end

Xylophone

  1. Gershwin, Porgy and Bess, four after 13 to 15 (standard excerpt from the Overture)
  2. Schumann, Symphony No. 3, bars 230-244 (Abel, 20th Century Percussion Studies, p. 67-68)
  3. Stravinsky, Les Noces, 2nd Tableau, 59-62 (Goldenberg book, p. 106)

Glockenspiel

  1. Dukas, The Sorcerer's Apprentice, 17-20
  2. Mozart, The Magic Flute (Goldenberg book, p. 102)
  3. Respighi, Pines of Rome, Mvt I, seven after 2 to end of movement

Timpani

  1. Bartók, Concerto for Orchestra, Intermezzo, standard excerpt
  2. Beethoven, Symphony No. 9, Mvt I, coda only
  3. Tchaikovsky, Symphony No. 4, Mvt I, four before T through the passage; include ff roll at end of passage

Recorded Auditions Acceptable format: DVD preferred, CD acceptable. Please label audition recording with your name and "timpani/percussion."

Applicants must submit the following:

  1. Admissions application (if submitting printable pdf application, please include 2 copies)
  2. Labeled audition recording (name and "timpani/percussion") if not choosing the live audition option
  3. One-page resume
  4. Short statement (less than 100 words) discussing why you want to attend the Music Academy
  5. Any other supporting materials you wish to include
  6. Application fee
