Applicants must 1. apply online and 2. perform a live audition OR submit 2 copies of a video DVD audition recording. Equal enrollment consideration is granted to both audition methods.

If not selecting the live audition option on the application, audition recording must be "received by" the deadline.

The Music Academy accepts five percussionists each summer. 

THE APPLICATION

The online application requires three components: the application data, a one-page resume, and a short (100 word) statement regarding why you wish to attend the Music Academy. An application fee must be paid by credit card or electronic check when submitting the online application. Application fees are NON-refundable.

The repertoire for DVD auditions is slightly reduced, as noted below under the DVD recording requirements.

  1. Prokofiev, Symphony No. 5, Mvt II (37-40 and 42-47)
  2. Rimsky-Korsakov, Scheherazade, Mvt III, D to E; Mvt IV, P to U, condense rests before S
  3. Rimsky-Korsakov, Capriccio Espagnol, Mvt IV

Xylophone

  1. Gershwin, Porgy and Bess, four after 13 to 15 (standard excerpt from the Overture)
  2. Copland, Appalachian Spring
  3. Kabalevsky, Colas Breugnon (all)
  4. Kodaly, Hary Janos, Mvt VI (all)

Glockenspiel

  1. Dukas, The Sorcerer's Apprentice, 17-20
  2. Mozart, The Magic Flute (Goldenberg book, p. 102)
  3. Respighi, Pines of Rome, Mvt I, seven after 2 to end of movement

Timpani

  1. Bartók, Concerto for Orchestra, Intermezzo, standard excerpt
  2. Beethoven, Symphony No. 9, Mvt I, coda only
  3. Tchaikovsky, Symphony No. 4, Mvt I, four before T through the passage; include ff roll at end of passage

VIDEO DVD AUDITION RECORDINGS:  Applicants who do not audition live must submit 2 copies of an unedited DVD with the following reductions to the above repertoire list: after the three solos, play only excerpts 1 and 2 from the lists for snare drum, xylophone, glockenspiel and timpani. DVDs must be recorded in the order above. DVDs must be playable on a standard DVD player.
