Trombone and Tuba

Trombone and tuba applicants must provide 1 copy of a labeled audition recording and an application. Materials must be submitted online or postmarked by 15 January 2010. Applications are considered incomplete until all required materials have been received. The Music Academy accepts four trombone players (three tenor and one bass) and one tuba player each year.

The Application

The application contains three components: the application form, a one-page resume, and a short statement (100 words) explaining why you wish to attend the Music Academy.

Online applications are preferred. Applicants also have the option of downloading and printing a written application in pdf format. An application fee is required when submitting either application. The resume and statement must accompany the application. Provisions exist for including these with online applications. In the case of printable applications, please attach resume and statement.

The Recorded Audition

All applicants must submit 1 copy of a recorded audition. Piano accompaniment is preferred on solo work. Audition requirements are as follows:

Tenor Trombone

  1. Solo of choice - must include one slow movement and one fast movement, or a one movement solo that demonstrates both lyrical and technical facility
  2. Mozart, Requiem, Tuba mirum, solo

  4. Ravel, Bolero, solo
  5. Mahler, Symphony No. 3,  I, third bar of number 13 to number 17

Bass Trombone

Tuba

Video format strongly preferred, but CD format is also acceptable. Avoid recording in a room that is excessively resonant or dry, and do not add "reverb" to your recording. Please record excerpts in the order above and do not include any other excerpts or pieces. Recordings must be playable on a standard DVD or CD player.

Applicants who submit early are eligible for discounted application fees. To qualify for an early application discount, all materials - including recordings - must be submitted by the appropriate deadline.  Application fees are non-refundable.  See "Application Deadlines & Audition Dates" for complete details.
