Solo Piano Program
Jerome Lowenthal, Director; Joseph Kalichstein
The Solo Piano Program, under the direction of Jerome Lowenthal, provides advanced instruction, with a primary emphasis on solo performance.
Application Process, Audition List, Dates and Deadlines
Fellows gain interpretative and stylistic mastery of the extensive literature for solo piano as well as concerto repertoire and chamber music with piano. The Music Academy accepts 10 solo pianists each year.
Individual Lessons
All solo piano Fellows receive weekly one-hour individual lessons.
Chamber Music with Piano
Each Fellow is assigned at least one ensemble - string, woodwind, or mixed. Ensemble music is drawn from the entire chamber repertoire for combinations of three or more instruments.
Concerto Competition
The Concerto Competition is open to all solo pianists. Solo piano Fellows are encouraged to study a concerto in preparation for this event. At least three winners, chosen by a panel of judges, are awarded the opportunity to perform with the Academy Festival Orchestra.
Masterclasses
All Fellows are required to participate in weekly public masterclasses. Repertoire is chosen in consultation with faculty; standard repertoire predominates, but unusual program pieces are welcome.
