MAKI KUBOTA (’14,’15) 25, born in Santa Monica, California, recently completed his graduate studies at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University as a student of Desmond Hoebig, supported by the Annette and Hugh Gragg Principal Chair in Cello Full Scholarship Program. Mr. Kubota is also a graduate of the Peabody Conservatory where he studied with Alan Stepansky. Maki Kubota performs with the Charleston Symphony, and is a substitute cellist for the Houston Symphony. While a Music Academy fellow in 2015, he was selected for the Zarin Mehta Global Academy and subsequently performed with the New York Philharmonic in 2016. This fall, Mr. Kubota will begin touring through Europe and Central America on the Holland America Line, performing as a member of the Lincoln Center Stage resident piano quintet. This is his third summer at the Music Academy of the West.
