Ways to Volunteer

Music Academy volunteers truly make the Music Academy Summer School & Festival possible.

Volunteers can choose to pitch in as representatives in The Shops on campus, to usher at Music Academy events and at Met Live in HD screenings, or as valued Compeers to support individual fellows along their journey.

Learn more below!

Do not miss this great opportunity to be with talented, enthusiastic, funny, loving young people.  The best 8 weeks you can imagine.  I wouldn’t think of being away from Santa Barbara during the Music Academy season.

The Compeer Program

The Compeer Program

The Compeer Program has created enduring friendships, deepened the community’s appreciation for music, and fostered moral support support for Academy Fellows.

First things first: Being a Compeer was an extraordinary and powerfully wonderful experience. I loved it all.
— 2016 Compeer

This innovative and fun program unites Music Academy fellows and audience members (“Compeers”) in rewarding one-on-one friendships. Unique to the Music Academy, this extraordinary program is an integral aspect of the Festival experience for all involved and has transformed the Academy’s community for the past 20 years.

Gain insight into the lives and careers of the next generation of great classically-trained musicians. Bond with bright, focused, and dedicated musicians from around the world, offering them a supportive community and  someone to personally perform for. Become a Compeer today!

Being a Compeer made the music so much more meaningful to me! Thank you for this wonderful, enriching opportunity!

HOW IT WORKS

  • Academy fellows are matched by mutual interests with a "Compeer".
  • The Festival season begins with a celebratory dinner on campus at which fellows and Compeers are introduced.
  • Compeers and fellows spend free-time together approximately once per week during the Festival.
  • Compeers support and encourage fellows by attending performances and greeting and congratulating fellows at their performances.
I feel as though I have a much better interpretation of the powerful work the Academy is doing in Santa Barbara and around the world.
— 2016 Compeer

The Compeer Program is a benefit of membership of the Council of Contributors; members receive priority in the matching process. Additional patrons are then invited to participate.

Do not miss this great opportunity to be with talented, enthusiastic, funny, loving young people.  The best 8 weeks you can imagine.  I wouldn’t think of being away from Santa Barbara during the Music Academy season.

Please note: fellows do not live with Compeers. The Music Academy provides fellows with accommodations at Westmont College, local transportation, and meals. Compeers are not responsible to host fellows at their homes or offer financial assistance.

Women’s Auxiliary

Women’s Auxiliary

The Women’s Auxiliary of the Music Academy is one of the largest and most successful supporting volunteer organizations in Santa Barbara.

The Auxiliary’s fundraising efforts generate net proceeds exceeding $200,000 annually to help support the full-scholarship program at the Academy. The scholarships enable 140 outstanding fellows from around the world to study in Santa Barbara each summer.

The Women's Auxiliary actively supports the Music Academy in numerous ways.

Contact Auxiliary Chair Cevin Cathell to join.

  • The Auxiliary spearheads May Madness, an annual treasure and estate sale that has been a Santa Barbara tradition for 40 years. Sales proceeds benefit the Academy's full-scholarship program.

  • The Shops at the Music Academy; The Rack, a resale clothing shop, and The Treasure House, a shop for quality antiques and home furnishings, are both supported by Auxiliary members. Proceeds from sales help underwrite Music Academy programs.

  • Auxiliary members volunteer to usher for masterclasses and events at the Summer School & Festival and year-round at Met: Live in HD screening.
