Mezzo-soprano Sun-Ly Pierce and pianist Chien-Lin Lu have been selected as the winners of the Music Academy of the West’s 2019 Marilyn Horne Song Competition. This fierce competition is one of the most popular events of the summer season at the Music Academy, in which singers and pianists alike compete to win the Regina Roney cash prize of $5,000 each, a national and international recital tour, career consultations with music career experts, 21C Media Group, and an innovation fund to use towards recital programming and commissioning.

Joining world-renowned concert and opera singer Marilyn Horne as jurors this year were Music Director of the Houston Grand Opera Studio Michael Heaston and composer-in-residence Jennifer Higdon, who has composed the song cycle Wise Moon for the winners to premiere on their tour.

The Song Competition winners’ 2020 recital tour will also include appearances at Hahn Hall at the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara (Friday, April 10, 7:30 pm), National Sawdust in New York (Monday, April 13, 7 pm), and LSO St. Luke’s in London (Friday, April 24, 1 pm).
